This artwork, that will be exhibited at MAT, is a digital image based on the Cairo agreement signed by the Lebanese State in November 3, 1969. In order to obtain this image, the artist uses the capacity of the computer to render the file containing the text of this agreement as if it was image file. The computer calculated the binary code of the text file and generated the corresponding image.

"Grading the Lebanese Constitution" is a web based project where people can make anonymous grading for any and every article of the actual Lebanese Constitution. An Overall Average Grade is constantly displayed and updated. This grading centered project with its mass evaluation process implies different ways of reading the numbers and graphs of all the statistical results. It's a work that deals with data interpretation to offer multiple analysis levels relative to our emotional and rational attitude toward the Constitution.

Claire Duport et Ricardo Mbarkho proposent une réflexion et un travail de définition de l’art politique, et des liens entre art et politique; à partir de notions théoriques et d'une analyse d'œuvres numériques, seront interrogés la portée esthétique et éthique de l'art politique. A travers la pensée de Bruno Latour pour Claire Duport, et à travers son œuvre numérique pour Ricardo Mbarkho, un échange d’idées critiques aura lieu entre les deux intervenants, suivi d’une discussion avec les étudiants dans le contexte de plusieurs universités.

en marge du salon du Livre francophone de Beyrouth

Pour la première fois cette année, les Rencontres d’Averroès françaises trouvent un prolongement au Liban, à l’initiative de Shams, en collaboration avec l’Institut Français de Beyrouth, Zinc, les Instants Vidéo, Espaceculture et la région PACA.
Ces deux tables rondes qui se tiendront fin octobre constituent un prélude à la création des « Multaka Ibn Rochd », édition libanaise des Rencontres d’Averroès orientée sur les problématiques artistiques et culturelles qui traversent le monde méditerranéen.

Le thème « Culture de la révolution, révolution des cultures » sera décliné lors de deux tables rondes. Dans un monde arabe agité, bouleversé voire écroulé, les débats évoqueront les changements sociopolitiques et culturels en place dans le monde arabes et seront diffusés sous forme audio/vidéo sur le site des Rencontres d’Averroés et SHAMS. Ils feront écho à la deuxième table ronde des Rencontres de Marseille « Entre renaissance citoyenne et transparence politique, révolution numérique ou contrôle des libertés ».

La première table ronde évoquera le recours aux technologies de la communication et de l’information dans tous les domaines, et singulièrement dans la culture, impliquant à la fois les artistes et les citoyens pour vivre la société 2.0, la subir ou l’inventer. La deuxième table reviendra sur le printemps arabe - révolution et culture : une révolution culturelle ou une culture de révolutions – sous des angles scientifiques et artistiques.

Reinventing the terminology of art

The 17th Biennale de Paris is taking place where things are occurring.
From 19 to 25 October 2010, it is in Nicosia in partnership with Artos
Foundation around the project "Reinventing the terminology of art".

Art was built by successive liberations from its own values. New practices
appeared along with new terms. A term always arises from an existing
practice and defines it thus that it was hitherto indefinable. Name it is
to have it exist. Moreover it allows a progression and an extension of the
practice from which it is deriving. The terminology of art has changed
very little over the last fifty years. Accepting the immobility of the
terminology of art would be admitting the impossibility of historical
continuity. On the contrary, a renewed terminology is an encouraging sign
that art is being transformed. This is why an update has become essential.
The nature of the Biennale de Paris constitutive steps means that the
usual art words are insufficient to realise, to identify or to describe
them. In that, new words or terms are necessary. These terms are laying
the foundations of a new art terminology.

In 2001, I initiated a yearly national day, celebrated the first Saturday of the month of July (this year the 3-7-2010), is dedicated to TABBOULEH.

The TABBOULEH is the most famous Lebanese traditional dish, adulated by all the inhabitants of the cedar’s country, and adopted by number of gastronomes in the world. It’s a dish that unites, in a country torn by wars and tensions; a symbolic dish by the diversity of its ingredients: Like the Lebanese nation, its delicate harmony is threatened anytime that one of its components is separated or even neglected, while its colors, green, white and red are those of the Lebanese flag.

During this day, Lebanese and their friends everywhere in the world meet in private or in public around this king of the mezzé. This artistic, cultural, gastronomic and touristy feast presents them an opportunity to show and to reinforce their attachment to their country. This year, a big public gathering is organized at Souk el Tayeb in Saifi Village (downtown - Beirut), where savoring and competitions of the best TABBOULEH will take place (www.soukeltayeb.com).

In 2007, the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism granted its approval and its patronage officially for the NATIONAL TABBOULEH DAY.

Let's celebrate all together the next NATIONAL TABBOULEH DAY that will take place on Saturday July 3, 2010.

Since 1999, I've been spreading the contact information of many people who accept to be contacted by anyone informed about their availability. “Each one has from art what art has from itself » is the title of this art activity.

"Digital Visuals from Lebanon"

A series of 8 digital images, printed on photo papers, based on the numerous agreements signed by the Lebanese State since the independence of Lebanon. In order to obtain these images, the artist uses the capacity of the computer to render the files containing the texts of these agreements as if they were image files. The computer calculated the binary code of each text file and generated the corresponding image.

The series will be exhibited at PIECE UNIQUE gallery, Saifi, Beirut Downtown, in the frame of CREA NUMERICA.

As part of its activities as the Cultural Observatory of Middle East, ARTos Foundation is organizing the Exhibition ‘Beauty is the bEAST’ in the wider framework of the exhibition ‘Windows Upon Oceans’ which will be held in five European countries.

On the part of Cyprus, the exhibition will be 3-scaled, presenting the art work of artists from the Middle East in Nicosia, Limassol and Madrid. The exhibition will include projections of video art, photography, performances and installations of artists who were located during ARTos’ research trips to Lebanon and Egypt.

The exhibition ‘Windows Upon Oceans’ is the closing event of the three year European program Artventure in which take part, apart from Cyprus, Greece, France, Belgium and Poland. The main aim of the program is to identify new forms of artistic expression, to promote mobility of the artists, artworks and cultural operators by means of travelling exhibitions and screenings, residencies and artistic presentations throughout Europe.

The exhibition will be held in the following venues:

April 2009 YASMIN Discussion: New Media: User's Behavior, Social Systems, and the Body Politic

This discussion deals with how (new) media can affect local behaviours related to creativity and innovation within a socio-political context, and what is the link between politic and the ways that users behave.
We are interested in exploring how artistic and cultural expression in a given location can be affected by global networked systems, and the interactions with social systems and behaviours. The Intention behind artworks vs. new media as a device for being in touch, so for being creative.

SMS strategies can affect politics and democracy, especially with programs based on mass voting via SMS; depending on the voting results, this social activity can challenge the community isolation versus the fear of dissolution into a more regional or global system.
Politics uses (new) media when planning and imagining dozens of utopian models for the country; but media power is explored on the other hand by artists who reflect the absurdity of the politic.

Virtual social networks maintain difficult relations caused by economical necessities that force families to disperse physically in order to seek living. In this vibrant atmosphere, the identity and belonging convictions are often scrambled by the eclectic media content.

- Is (new) media a tool which reinforces people's creativity and how it is expressed in terms of social behaviour?
- How are democracy and social connectivity via new media related?
- Are global and local systems two separate entities, or is it about one place?
- What is the impact of the media content on identity in your socio-politic sphere?
- How is the economy affecting visual forms of communication?
- Do artworks emerge from a specific Intention or from media models constrained by business requirements?
- What new roles do virtual social networks adopt to maintain difficult relations?

Ricardo Mbarkho

Ricardo Mbarkho is an artist and lecturer. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1974. His works and lectures take part in many publications, media, and in education and art institutions and events in Lebanon and internationally. In his work, he often uses new media to tackle questions mainly related to human relations and belonging issues within the socio-political sphere. Ricardo Mbarkho received his Art Diplomas from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and Ecole Supérieure d’Etudes Cinématographiques, Paris, France and from Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts, Beirut. He also completed an exchange study program at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. He teaches art, video, and new media at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts, Beirut. Currently, he lives and works in Lebanon and France.

Eugenio Tisselli Vélez

Born in Mexico City, 1972. Writer, teacher and programmer. His areas of interest include digital narratives and technology as a tool/medium for social research. His work (installation, performance, software, text and net.art) has been featured in different festivals and exhibitions around the world, and is available at www.motorhueso.net. He is the developer of zexe.net, a mobile communication project for groups in risk of exclusion, initiated by Antoni Abad. He worked as an Associate Researcher at Sony Computer Science Lab in Paris. Currently, he is a teacher and co-director of the Master in Digital Arts at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona.

Graduated in History of Art, Delphine Tonglet collaborates with Studio Azzurro, an Italian group of video creation from 2000 to 2008 as responsible for public relations (www.studioazzurro.com). During her collaboration with Studio Azzurro she followed the project "Méditations Méditerranées, a two years production presented as a exhibition dedicated to Mediterranean area interpreted with new technologies language and other productions for exhibitions or museums dedicated to various thematic with a particular attention on territories aspects and visitor’s involvement. For Studio Azzurro, she coordinated various research projects financed by European Commission, a first one dedicated to digital libraries (www.brickscommunity.org) and a second one dedicated to multimodal interfaces applied to digital theatre (www.callas-newmedia.eu); She also followed RAMI a Mediterranean project focused on Encounters on Arts and Multimedia

Tereza Wagner an art historian and a UNESCO Senior Programme Specialist dealing with arts and creative issues www.unesco.org. Her graduate and undergraduate degrees are from Paris V University, France, including a doctorate in Anthropology of Contemporary Arts. Former member of UNESCO’s Arts and Cultural Enterprise Division, she is now in charge of the co-ordination of cultural events within the Cultural sector of UNESCO. During her career in UNESCO, her work operates within the framework of a professional team of specialists on an international scale: They initiated the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts www.unesco.org/culture/creativity/prize, which includes the new UNESCO Digital Award; and launched an international campaign for film restoration including an international festival of recently restored films; and a programme for the teaching of arts which lead to the creation of the LEA International web site www.unesco.org/lea; and to the
holding of the first World Conference on Arts Education “Building Creative Capacities for the 21st Century” (March 2006, Lisbon, Portugal). The Association of Lebanese Artists presents « Lebanon Now », the art exhibition of the new media. Sponsored by USAID, this exhibition shows works done with the latest technological means. These works question Lebanon today, which is more disconcerting and intriguing than ever. The artists experiment with the binary code and look at Information and Communication Technology from a new perspective. The artists « tell » their Lebanon through the elements of their numerical world, i.e. images, sound, and words. This event transposes the observer (turned into user) into a new aesthetical experiment.

Ricardo Mbarkho presents « Digital visuals from Lebanon », a series of digital images printed on large format photo papers based on the numerous agreements signed by the Lebanese State since the independence of Lebanon. In order to obtain these images, the artist uses the capacity of the computer to render the files containing the texts of these agreements as if they were image files. The computer calculated the binary code of each text file and generated the corresponding image. The series comprises images of binary codes of texts such as: the Doha agreement, the Taef accord, the Lebanon-Syria Treaty of Brotherhood, Cooperation and Coordination, the tripartite agreement, the Cairo agreement, the national pact, the Lebanese constitution, as well as the word « Lebanon » itself.

This video questions the mobility of the Arameans in the Lebanese social context; this is through the example of an Assyrian woman who has undergone one of the explosions in Beirut. Since they moved from Iraq, until their departure from Syria, are the Arameans who hold their language and their religion pursued again by terrorism in Lebanon?

Presentation by Ricardo Mbarkho

In his lecture, Ricardo Mbarkho talks about today's media art scene in Beirut. He also shows a selection of videos where many approaches are tackled to question the identity crisis in today's Lebanese socio-political and cultural sphere. The war on Lebanon since 1975 remains a major concern for the multicultural Lebanese society. Today, Lebanon is witnessing one of its tensest political divisions, and failed to elect a president able to bridge the gap between the current government and the opposition. The impact between the Middle East conflict, the media system and art is raised by Mbarkho from the geographical and the historical angles.

With this seminar, participants widen their knowledge, experiments and research in art using new media. They study and think the New Technologies of Information and Communication (Internet/Cyberspace, mobiles, satellites, digital networks, interactive games, etc.) with their impact on the artist’s social and political environment, and how this impact is or could be shaped in their projects. So what are the new possibilities to experiment with? How to collaborate with electronic engineers and scientists for this purpose? What are the new esthetics that were never possible before the invention of the virtual/cyberspace, of the interactivity, and of the digital network with the Internet? This seminar is theory and aesthetic oriented; a research laboratory in new media art is thus implemented in class. The aim is to cover a quick overview on the history of new media art in order to analyze art works and understand the judgment criterion for this new esthetic. The participants are constantly oriented to define and locate their positioning as artists operating in the new media field, within the global today’s art practices.

RAMI

The RAMI project is an international platform for experimentation, exchange and circulation dedicated to contemporary creation, digital tools and multimedia in the Mediterranean.
Developed by SHAMS-Beirut, ZINC/ECM-Marseilles, l'ATELIER of Alexandria and ASTAR-Milan between September 2006 and December 2007, the RAMI project is hold in 7 steps in Marseille, Aix, Beirut and Alexandria.
In this step, three workshops, two research seminars, one technical unit and several "cartes blanches" will be animated by French, Italian, Lebanese and Egyptian artists.

The call for participants' candidature is opened particularly in Lebanon and Egypt and, under budgetary consideration, for Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria and Syria.

Deadline has been extended until the 2th of September 2007.
Answers will be done around the 12 of September.

Arab Digital Expression camps - a project related to education for children from Arab countries – will take place in Egypt in July and August 2007. Team Misr (the project initiator company) invited Ricardo Mbarak to take part of the Curriculum Developers meeting in Cairo to finalize the basic goals, objective, measurements and suggested material and methodology for the curricula to be implemented during the camps. This includes curriculum development for digital film and video; visual design (print and digital); digital music and web design. Definition: A residential summer camp for Arab youth aged between 12 and 15. The three-week camp will teach them how to proficiently use technological tools in the world of communications media to promote expression through image, sound and print. The camp will be an opportunity for 160 children from several Arab countries to exercise these tools in a free and fun environment. Online platform on art, design and technology in the Arab States, permits oral language to become images reflecting the rich Arab cultural environment. The UNESCO DigiArts Team organized an experts meeting on the evaluation and stocktaking of the Masters Module on Art, Design and Technology in the Arab States on 9 April 2006, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the Kitabat: Arabic Calligraphy and Typography Conference. Twenty one students completed the online part of the module and submitted project proposals in applying their newly acquainted skills in creative thinking, writing and design. Online teachers expressed their surprise in the success of the course and complemented the enthusiasm of the students, but also the quality of the visual material that was produced. The online environment managed and hosted by the MediaLab in Helsinki, permitted not only an in-depth exchange of ideas and documentation on the visual environment in the Arab States but dialogue among students also served as motivation to create artworks reflecting their rich cultural environment. The online course material included Arabic typography and design culture, Typographic Landscape in the Arab world, and the introduction to Art and New Media in the Arab States, with a case-study of Lebanon. The experts meeting permitted furthermore the organizers to finalize the logistics for the second part of the online and face-to-face Masters module “Digital imaging in art and design”, to take place at ALBA (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts), AUB (American University of Beirut) and LAU (Lebanese American University) starting from 26 June 2006. Fourteen students from 5 countries in the Arab States with different academic backgrounds were selected to participate in the second module. Lastly, next steps were discussed in expanding the network of universities in the region involved in Art, Design and Technology and promoting the masters initiative within the Arab States. The American University in Dubai is thanked for their hospitality in organizing the intervention of DigiArts in the Kitabat: Arabic Calligraphy and Typography Conference and the logistical support provided for the Experts Meeting. The Conference is an example of the growing demand of interest in Arabic calligraphy and typographic design in the region and the need to map a future for the Arabic script that is fully engaged with both the latest technologies and knowledge of its rich past. UNESCO, in cooperation with LAU (Lebanese American University), AUB (American University of Beirut), ALBA (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts), and other universities around the Arab region propose the creation of a master module on Art, Design and Technology for Arab States. The project aims at bridging the gap between academic disciplines of computer science and that of creative practice. The master module combines computing, design and creative practice. The first master class will be organized on an experimental basis in 2005-2006 and will be evaluated by a panel of participating universities before being integrated into existing curricula in the region. The 4th and the 5th of September 2004, Ricardo Mbarak will be in Linz (Austria) to participate to the workshop on the Creation of Art, Design and Technology Master Classes in the Arab States.

This workshop is programmed by the UNESCO in the frame of the festival ARS ELECRONICA.

Presentation:
This workshop will specifically look into the modalities to develop art, design and technology teaching in the Arab States in cooperation with the Mediterranean Rim at the university level. It aims at promoting international and intercultural dialogue, exchange and cooperation in this field, still relatively limited in this geographical and cultural area.

Pour des raisons mystérieuses, chaque fois que je m'interroge sur l'aspect capitaliste d'un jeu en ligne, une "erreur" ou un "accident" se produit et transforme le jeu en une expérience poétique et expérimentale!
Cela m’est déjà arrivé avec Hungry Shark Evolution, et maintenant encore avec Galaxy Attack où presque tout dans l'interface du jeu disparaît, sauf les nuages défilant sans fin...

Cette œuvre, qui sera exposée au MAT, est une image numérique faite à partir de l’accord du Caire, conclu par l’Etat libanais le 3 novembre 1969. Pour réaliser cette image, l’artiste a « forcé » un ordinateur à lire le fichier contenant le texte de cet accord comme si il était un fichier contenant une image. Le résultat de la lecture du code binaire de ce fichier texte a généré l’image équivalente.

Claire Duport et Ricardo Mbarkho proposent une réflexion et un travail de définition de l’art politique, et des liens entre art et politique; à partir de notions théoriques et d'une analyse d'œuvres numériques, seront interrogés la portée esthétique et éthique de l'art politique. Prélude à la création des « Multaka Ibn Rochd »
deux tables rondes inscrites « sous le signe d’Averroès », organisées par Shams
en marge du salon du Livre francophone de Beyrouth

Pour la première fois cette année, les Rencontres d’Averroès françaises trouvent un prolongement au Liban, à l’initiative de Shams, en collaboration avec l’Institut Français de Beyrouth, Zinc, les Instants Vidéo, Espaceculture et la région PACA.
Ces deux tables rondes qui se tiendront fin octobre constituent un prélude à la création des « Multaka Ibn Rochd », édition libanaise des Rencontres d’Averroès orientée sur les problématiques artistiques et culturelles qui traversent le monde méditerranéen.

Le thème « Culture de la révolution, révolution des cultures » sera décliné lors de deux tables rondes. Dans un monde arabe agité, bouleversé voire écroulé, les débats évoqueront les changements sociopolitiques et culturels en place dans le monde arabes et seront diffusés sous forme audio/vidéo sur le site des Rencontres d’Averroés et SHAMS. Ils feront écho à la deuxième table ronde des Rencontres de Marseille « Entre renaissance citoyenne et transparence politique, révolution numérique ou contrôle des libertés ».

La première table ronde évoquera le recours aux technologies de la communication et de l’information dans tous les domaines, et singulièrement dans la culture, impliquant à la fois les artistes et les citoyens pour vivre la société 2.0, la subir ou l’inventer. La deuxième table reviendra sur le printemps arabe - révolution et culture : une révolution culturelle ou une culture de révolutions – sous des angles scientifiques et artistiques.

En avril 2001, j'ai envoyé un email au sujet d’une journée de Tabbouleh à plus que 20000 libanais dans le monde entier (Plusieurs entre eux ont également transféré le message à leur livre d’adresses). Il s’agit d’une nouvelle journée de célébration : LA JOURNEE NATIONALE LIBANAISE DU TABBOULEH. Année après année cet événement est maintenant fêté par une grande partie des libanais (et de leurs amies et amis) au Liban et ailleurs.

Cette année, un rassemblement public est organisé à Souk el Tayeb qui aura lieu dans le Parking de Beirut Exhibition Center à BIEL (Centre-ville - Beyrouth), où il y aura dégustation et compétitions du meilleur TABBOULEH, de 10:30 au 11:30 (www.soukeltayeb.com).

Dans ce texte (en anglais), je parle de comment la globalisation et les nouveaux médias ont initié d’innovation et de créativité au Liban entre 2008 et 2011.

J'ai ouvert aujourd'hui le projet 'Grading the Lebanese Constitution' ('Noter la constitution libanaise') qui est un projet enligne où les gens peuvent donner, d'une façon anonyme, une note pour telle ou telle article de la Constitution libanaise actuelle. La note moyenne générale est constamment affichée et mise à jour. Ce projet qui est centré sur le system de notation, avec son processus d'évaluation par la masse, implique différentes façons de lire les chiffres et les graphs statistiques des résultats. C'est un travail qui porte sur l'interprétation des données pour offrir de multiple niveaux d'analyse par rapport à notre attitude envers la Constitution, que ca soit émotionnelle ou rationnelle.

Réinventer la terminologie de l'art

La 17e Biennale de Paris a lieu là où ça se passe. Elle se déroule à
Nicosie du 19 au 25 octobre 2010 en partenariat avec Artos Foundation,
autour du projet "Réinventer la terminologie de l'art".

L’art s’est construit par des affranchissements successifs de ses propres
valeurs. Des nouvelles pratiques sont apparues et avec elles, des nouveaux
termes. En effet, un terme naît toujours d’une pratique existante qu’il
définit alors qu’elle était jusqu’alors indéfinissable. Nommer c’est faire
exister. En outre il permet une progression et une extension de la
pratique dont il est issu. Mais la terminologie de l’art a très peu évolué
ces cinquante dernières années. Accepter l’immobilité de la terminologie
de l’art serait admettre l’impossibilité d’une continuité historique. Une
terminologie renouvelée est, à l’inverse, un signe encourageant que l’art
se transforme. C’est pourquoi une mise à jour est devenue indispensable.
La nature de démarches comme celles défendues par la Biennale de Paris
implique que les mots habituels de l’art ne suffisent pas à faire exister
celles-ci, à les identifier ou bien à les décrire. En ce sens, d’autres
mots ou notions sont nécessaires. Ces mots posent les bases d’une nouvelle
terminologie de l’art.

En 2001, j'avais lancé une journée nationale annuelle, célébrée le premier samedi du mois de juillet (cette année le 3-7-2010), dédiée au TABBOULEH.

Le TABBOULEH est le plus fameux plat traditionnel libanais, adulé de tous les habitants du pays du cèdre et adopté par nombre de gastronomes dans le monde. Plat réunificateur, s’il en est un, dans un pays déchiré par des guerres et des tensions ; plat symbolique par la diversité de ses ingrédients comme l’est la population libanaise : tout comme celle-ci, son harmonie délicate est menacée dès qu’un de ses composants en est écarté voire même négligé tandis que ses couleurs, vert, blanc et rouge sont celles du drapeau libanais.

Pendant cette journée, libanais et leurs ami(e)s partout dans le monde se réunissent en privé ou en public autour de ce roi du mezzé. Cette fête artistique, culturelle, gastronomique et touristique leur présente une occasion de montrer et renforcer leur attachement à leur pays. Cette année, une grande manifestation publique est organisée au Souk el Tayeb à Saifi Village (centre-ville - Beyrouth), où dégustations et concours des meilleurs TABBOULEH auront lieu (www.soukeltayeb.com).

En 2007, le Ministère du Tourisme libanais a officiellement accordé son approbation et son patronage à la JOURNEE NATIONALE DU TABBOULEH.

Fêtons tous ensemble la prochaine JOURNEE NATIONALE DU TABBOULEH qui aura lieu le samedi 3 juillet 2010.

Depuis 1999, je diffuse les coordonnées des gens qui ont accepté d’être contactés par toute personne informée à propos de leur acceptation et disponibilité. "Chacun a de l’art ce que l’art a de lui-même" est le titre de cette activité.

Le 28 avril 2010, une nouvelle liste de contacts sera affichée dans le cadre de l'exposition collective à la LAA Gallery, Beyrouth.

"Visuels numériques du Liban"
Juin 2008. Une série d’images numériques calculées à partir de fichiers texte

Une série de 8 images numériques faites à partir de multiples accords conclus par l’Etat libanais depuis l’indépendance du Liban, de 1943 jusqu’à nos jours. Pour réaliser ces images, l’artiste a forcé un ordinateur à lire les fichiers contenant les textes de ces accords comme si ils étaient des fichiers contenant des images. Le résultat de la lecture du code binaire de chaque fichier texte a généré l’image équivalente.

ARTos presents Windows Upon Oceans: BEAUTY IS THE bEAST

As part of its activities as the Cultural Observatory of Middle East, ARTos Foundation is organizing the Exhibition ‘Beauty is the bEAST’ in the wider framework of the exhibition ‘Windows Upon Oceans’ which will be held in five European countries.

On the part of Cyprus, the exhibition will be 3-scaled, presenting the art work of artists from the Middle East in Nicosia, Limassol and Madrid. The exhibition will include projections of video art, photography, performances and installations of artists who were located during ARTos’ research trips to Lebanon and Egypt.

The exhibition ‘Windows Upon Oceans’ is the closing event of the three year European program Artventure in which take part, apart from Cyprus, Greece, France, Belgium and Poland. The main aim of the program is to identify new forms of artistic expression, to promote mobility of the artists, artworks and cultural operators by means of travelling exhibitions and screenings, residencies and artistic presentations throughout Europe.

The exhibition will be held in the following venues:

April 2009 YASMIN Discussion: New Media: User's Behavior, Social Systems, and the Body Politic

This discussion deals with how (new) media can affect local behaviours related to creativity and innovation within a socio-political context, and what is the link between politic and the ways that users behave.
We are interested in exploring how artistic and cultural expression in a given location can be affected by global networked systems, and the interactions with social systems and behaviours. The Intention behind artworks vs. new media as a device for being in touch, so for being creative.

SMS strategies can affect politics and democracy, especially with programs based on mass voting via SMS; depending on the voting results, this social activity can challenge the community isolation versus the fear of dissolution into a more regional or global system.
Politics uses (new) media when planning and imagining dozens of utopian models for the country; but media power is explored on the other hand by artists who reflect the absurdity of the politic.

Virtual social networks maintain difficult relations caused by economical necessities that force families to disperse physically in order to seek living. In this vibrant atmosphere, the identity and belonging convictions are often scrambled by the eclectic media content.

- Is (new) media a tool which reinforces people's creativity and how it is expressed in terms of social behaviour?
- How are democracy and social connectivity via new media related?
- Are global and local systems two separate entities, or is it about one place?
- What is the impact of the media content on identity in your socio-politic sphere?
- How is the economy affecting visual forms of communication?
- Do artworks emerge from a specific Intention or from media models constrained by business requirements?
- What new roles do virtual social networks adopt to maintain difficult relations?

Ricardo Mbarkho

Ricardo Mbarkho is an artist and lecturer. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1974. His works and lectures take part in many publications, media, and in education and art institutions and events in Lebanon and internationally. In his work, he often uses new media to tackle questions mainly related to human relations and belonging issues within the socio-political sphere. Ricardo Mbarkho received his Art Diplomas from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and Ecole Supérieure d’Etudes Cinématographiques, Paris, France and from Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts, Beirut. He also completed an exchange study program at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. He teaches art, video, and new media at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts, Beirut. Currently, he lives and works in Lebanon and France.

Jordan Crandall (http://jordancrandall.com) is a media artist and theorist based in Los Angeles. He is Associate Professor in the Visual Arts Department at University of California, San Diego. He is currently at work on a multi-platform media work entitled "Showing," which looks at ecologies of display and the construction of the self through stagings, arousals, extensions, and intimacies. He is also at work on a development of assemblage theory that focuses on network ecologies, emergent presencing, and the dynamics of desire. Eugenio Tisselli Vélez

Born in Mexico City, 1972. Writer, teacher and programmer. His areas of interest include digital narratives and technology as a tool/medium for social research. His work (installation, performance, software, text and net.art) has been featured in different festivals and exhibitions around the world, and is available at www.motorhueso.net. He is the developer of zexe.net, a mobile communication project for groups in risk of exclusion, initiated by Antoni Abad. He worked as an Associate Researcher at Sony Computer Science Lab in Paris. Currently, he is a teacher and co-director of the Master in Digital Arts at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona.

Delphine Tonglet

Graduated in History of Art, Delphine Tonglet collaborates with Studio Azzurro, an Italian group of video creation from 2000 to 2008 as responsible for public relations (www.studioazzurro.com). During her collaboration with Studio Azzurro she followed the project "Méditations Méditerranées, a two years production presented as a exhibition dedicated to Mediterranean area interpreted with new technologies language and other productions for exhibitions or museums dedicated to various thematic with a particular attention on territories aspects and visitor’s involvement. For Studio Azzurro, she coordinated various research projects financed by European Commission, a first one dedicated to digital libraries (www.brickscommunity.org) and a second one dedicated to multimodal interfaces applied to digital theatre (www.callas-newmedia.eu); She also followed RAMI a Mediterranean project focused on Encounters on Arts and Multimedia

Tereza Wagner

Tereza Wagner an art historian and a UNESCO Senior Programme Specialist dealing with arts and creative issues www.unesco.org. Her graduate and undergraduate degrees are from Paris V University, France, including a doctorate in Anthropology of Contemporary Arts. Former member of UNESCO’s Arts and Cultural Enterprise Division, she is now in charge of the co-ordination of cultural events within the Cultural sector of UNESCO. During her career in UNESCO, her work operates within the framework of a professional team of specialists on an international scale: They initiated the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts www.unesco.org/culture/creativity/prize, which includes the new UNESCO Digital Award; and launched an international campaign for film restoration including an international festival of recently restored films; and a programme for the teaching of arts which lead to the creation of the LEA International web site www.unesco.org/lea; and to the
holding of the first World Conference on Arts Education “Building Creative Capacities for the 21st Century” (March 2006, Lisbon, Portugal). She leaded the DigiArts programme: UNESCO Knowledge Portal http://portal.unesco.org/digiarts, an initiative to promote ICT creative tools and e-Learning among people at school level. She has also published articles on African cinema, African contemporary arts and arts education in specialised magazines.

Une heure d’entretien avec d’importantes figures culturelles du Moyen Orients. Programme de Joseph Eisawi.

Une journée nationale annuelle dédiée au Tabbouleh, célébrée le premier samedi du mois de juillet. Cette année, pour la 8ème année, c'est le 5 juillet 2008.

Le Tabbouleh est le plus fameux plat traditionnel libanais, adulé de tous les habitants du pays du cèdre et adopté par nombre de gastronomes dans le monde. Plat symbolique par la diversité de ses ingrédients comme l’est la nation libanaise : tout comme celle-ci, son harmonie délicate est menacée dès qu’un de ses composants en est écarté voire même négligé tandis que ses couleurs, vert, blanc et rouge sont celles du drapeau libanais.

Pendant cette journée, libanais et leurs ami(e)s partout dans le monde se réunissent en privé ou en public autour de ce roi du mezzé. Cette fête artistique, culturelle, gastronomique et touristique leur présente une occasion de montrer et renforcer leur attachement à leur pays. Comment ? Il suffit que chacun mange le Tabbouleh chez lui, en sachant qu'il ou elle est en train de partager le plat avec tous les libanais et leur copins-copines au monde! Fêtons tous ensemble la prochaine JOURNEE NATIONALE DU TABBOULEH!

L'Association des Artistes Libanais présente l’exposition « Lebanon Now » d’art des nouveaux médias. Cette exposition sponsorisée par USAID rassemble des œuvres réalisées grâce aux moyens techniques les plus avancés s'interrogent sur un Liban aujourd’hui plus déconcertant, plus intrigant que jamais. Les artistes se livrent à des expériences où le code binaire occupe le devant de la scène, où la Nouvelle Technologie de l’Information et de la Communication est vue autrement. Les artistes « disent » leur Liban à travers les éléments du monde numérique, à savoir les images, le son, et les mots. Cet événement transpose l’observateur (métamorphosé en utilisateur) dans une expérimentation esthétique nouvelle.

Ricardo Mbarkho présente une série d’images numériques imprimées sur papiers photo grande taille. Elles sont faites à partir de multiples accords conclus par l’Etat libanais depuis l’indépendance du Liban jusqu’à nos jours. Pour avoir ces images, l’artiste utilise le fait que l’ordinateur puise lire les fichiers contenant les textes de ces accords comme si ils sont bel et bien des fichiers images. L’ordinateur calcule ainsi le code binaire de chaque fichier texte pour en générer l’image équivalente. Dans la série, on trouve des images issues des codes binaires de textes comme : l'accord de Doha, l’accord de Taef, Lebanon-Syria Treaty of Brotherhood, Cooperation and Coordination, l’accord tripartite, l’accord du Caire, le pacte national, la constitution du Liban, ainsi que le mot « Lebanon » lui-même.

Présentation par Ricardo Mbarkho

Dans sa conférence, Ricardo Mbarkho parle de la scène de l'art utilisant les médias aujourd'hui à Beyrouth. Il montre aussi une sélection de vidéos où plusieurs approches d'artistes questionnent la crise de l'identité dans le Liban aujourd'hui. La guerre sur le Liban depuis 1975 restes une inquiétude majeure pour la société multiculturelle libanaise. Aujourd'hui, le Liban témoigne une de ses divisions politiques les plus tendues, et a manqué de choisir un président capable de remplir le vide entre les progouvernementaux et l'opposition. L'impact entre le conflit au Moyen-Orient, le système médiatique et l'art est soulevé par Mbarkho des angles géographiques et historiques.

Ces vidéos seront montrées lors d’une installation multi-écrans artistique au Goethe-Institut, en même temps qu’une collection d’œuvres d’artistes libanais d’art vidéo, compilée par SHAMS. PS. Avec ce séminaire, les participants élargissent leur connaissance, expériences et recherche dans l’art utilisant les nouveaux médias. Ils étudient et pensent les Nouvelles Technologies d'Information et de la Communication (Internet/Cyberespace, mobile, satellites, réseaux numériques, jeux interactifs, etc.) avec leur impact sur l'environnement social et politique de l'artiste, et comment cet impact est ou pourrait être façonné dans leurs projets. Donc quelles sont les nouvelles possibilités pour expérimenter avec? Comment collaborer avec les ingénieurs électroniques et les scientifiques pour ce but? Quelles sont les nouvelles esthétiques qui n'étaient jamais possibles avant l'invention du virtuel/cyberespace, de l’interactivité, et du réseau numérique avec l'Internet ? Ce séminaire est orienté vers la théorie et l’esthétique; un laboratoire de recherche dans les nouveaux médias est donc installé en classe. Le but est d’avoir un aperçu sur l'histoire des nouveaux médias et l’art, pour analyser des travaux artistiques et comprendre les critères du jugement pour ce nouvel esthétique. Les participants sont orientés constamment pour définir et trouver leur positionnement en tant qu’artistes qui opèrent dans le champ des nouveaux médias, dans la sphère de l'art aujourd'hui.

RAMI Plate forme de Rencontres Arts et Multimédia en Mediterranée. Liban, Egypte, France – 2006/2007 Un projet conçu et propose par ZINC/ECM, SHAMS, L’ATELIER d’Alexandrie et ASTAR Le projet RAMI est une plate-forme d’expérimentation et de diffusion qui, entre septembre 2006 et décembre 2007, propose des échanges internationaux autour de la création contemporaine et des outils numériques et multimédia. État des lieux dynamique, ce projet propose aux artistes, au public et aux professionnels un espace d’échange et de réflexion. Le projet RAMI se tient en 7 étapes entre Marseille, Aix, Beyrouth et Alexandrie. Colonies Arabes pour l'Expression Numérique (Arab Digital Expression camps) - un projet en rapport avec l'éducation d'enfants des pays arabes - Il aura lieu en Egypte en juillet et août 2007. Team Misr (la compagnie initiatrice du projet) a invité Ricardo Mbarak pour faire partie des développeurs du programme pédagogique, et cela pendant la rencontre au Caire pour finaliser les buts de base, l'objectif, les dimensions à prendre et les matériel nécessaires ainsi que la méthodologie d'enseignement pour le cursus de la colonie. Cela inclut le développement du cursus film et vidéo numérique; design visuel (impression et numérique); musique numérique et Web design. Définition : Une colonie de vacances résidentielle pour des jeunes arabes qui ont entre 12 et 15 ans. La colonie de 3 semaines leur apprendra comment bien utiliser les outils technologiques de pointe dans le monde des médias, pour encourager l'expression à travers image, son et empreinte. La colonie sera une occasion pour 160 enfants de plusieurs pays arabes pour exercer ces outils dans un environnement libre et amusant. Emplacement et dates : La colonie aura lieu en deux sessions, juillet et août 2007, dans le bel emplacement vert du Gulf Soleimaniyah Resort qui est à 50 km loin de Caire sur le Cairo-Alex route. Une semaine plus tard, la guerre éclate. Pendant un peu plus d’un mois tous les regards se tournent vers le Liban. Le pays est dévasté.—Nous ne savions pas jusqu’à tout récemment si nous pourrions diffuser la présente série de bandes vidéo des artistes Libanais prévue à notre calendrier. Dans les circonstances, étrangement, cela prenait tout à coup très peu et beaucoup d’importance. Aussi, la Galerie B-312 est très heureuse de présenter dans la petite salle cette série de vidéos.—À travers ce programme, les commissaires Ricardo Mbarak et Wadih Safieddine ont privilégié des œuvres où se pose la question de l’identité. « La sélection montre plusieurs positionnements d’artistes qui privilégient dans leurs oeuvres des critères en rapport avec leur environnement. Il s’agit ici de la société libanaise actuelle, là où la religion, la politique, la guerre et la postguerre continuent à affecter la question de l’identité et de l’appartenance au Liban. »—D’une durée totale de 76 minutes, les bandes sont diffusées en continu tout au cours de l’exposition. Ricardo Mbarak, artiste des nouveaux médias et de la vidéo, enseigne à l’Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (Beyrouth). Il est conseiller et coordinateur du Festival International de Film et Vidéo de Création, un festival annuel présenté en avril à Beyrouth (Liban), qui regroupe des sélections en provenance de multiples manifestations de film, de vidéo et de nouveaux médias dans le monde. Alf Sa7tayn w Hana ------- En 2006, la 6ème JOURNEE NATIONALE LIBANAISE DU TABOULEH est présentée par la BIENNALE DE PARIS : BIENNALE DE PARIS Communiqué du 22 juin 2006 --------------------------------------------- Journée Nationale Libanaise du Tabouleh Lieu : Beyrouth, Liban Date : 01.07.2006 La 15ème Biennale de Paris qui aura lieu du 1er au 31 octobre 2006 à Paris en France et à l'étranger présente la Journée Nationale Libanaise du Tabbouleh. Cette journée se déroulera chaque année, le premier samedi du mois de juillet. Cette année elle aura lieu le premier juillet, pour la sixième année consécutive. Il s'agit d'un rassemblement sans prétention aucune, de la communauté libanaise autour d'un repas traditionnel et accessible à tous. Cela a pour seule ambition de tenter d'apaiser les tensions et divisions qui touchent un peuple meurtri par trente années de guerre. Une démarche simple, originale que lance en 2001 l'artiste et professeur à l'Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts à Beyrouth, Ricardo Mbarak. Depuis cette date, le nombre des gens qui célebrent cette fête et qui font circuler la nouvelle via Internet et le bouche à oreille n'a cessé de s'accroître. Grâce à cette initiative plus de 240 000 personnes au Liban, au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe se sont réunis en 2005; et cela sans aucune promotion de l'état libanais jusque là. Alors à votre tour faites circuler la nouvelle et rejoignez nous autour de ce plat culinaire : il ne vous suffit que de la bonne recette, une pincée de convivialité et de bonne humeur. [Version anglaise] Online platform on art, design and technology in the Arab States, permits oral language to become images reflecting the rich Arab cultural environment. The UNESCO DigiArts Team organized an experts meeting on the evaluation and stocktaking of the Masters Module on Art, Design and Technology in the Arab States on 9 April 2006, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the Kitabat: Arabic Calligraphy and Typography Conference. Twenty one students completed the online part of the module and submitted project proposals in applying their newly acquainted skills in creative thinking, writing and design. Online teachers expressed their surprise in the success of the course and complemented the enthusiasm of the students, but also the quality of the visual material that was produced. The online environment managed and hosted by the MediaLab in Helsinki, permitted not only an in-depth exchange of ideas and documentation on the visual environment in the Arab States but dialogue among students also served as motivation to create artworks reflecting their rich cultural environment. The online course material included Arabic typography and design culture, Typographic Landscape in the Arab world, and the introduction to Art and New Media in the Arab States, with a case-study of Lebanon. The experts meeting permitted furthermore the organizers to finalize the logistics for the second part of the online and face-to-face Masters module “Digital imaging in art and design”, to take place at ALBA (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts), AUB (American University of Beirut) and LAU (Lebanese American University) starting from 26 June 2006. Fourteen students from 5 countries in the Arab States with different academic backgrounds were selected to participate in the second module. Lastly, next steps were discussed in expanding the network of universities in the region involved in Art, Design and Technology and promoting the masters initiative within the Arab States. The American University in Dubai is thanked for their hospitality in organizing the intervention of DigiArts in the Kitabat: Arabic Calligraphy and Typography Conference and the logistical support provided for the Experts Meeting. The Conference is an example of the growing demand of interest in Arabic calligraphy and typographic design in the region and the need to map a future for the Arabic script that is fully engaged with both the latest technologies and knowledge of its rich past. FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE FILM ET VIDEO DE CREATION Nouvelles images en mouvement 2ème édition Cinéma Empire Sofil - Beyrouth Du 2 au 5 mars 2006. 17h - 24h C’est au cinéma Empire Sofil que le grand public pourra assister à la seconde édition du « Festival International de Film et Vidéo de Création». Une occasion unique au Liban de voir pendant quatre jours une sélection des meilleures vidéos provenant de plusieurs festivals et projets libanais et européens de vidéos de création : « Festival du Film Libanais » (Liban), « Transmediales » (Allemagne), « Xeno_Tech » (Pays-Bas), et « Festival du Film de Pesaro » (Italie). Ces projections seront précédées de conférences par des vidéastes, des producteurs, des théoriciens et certains des responsables de ces festivals. UNESCO, avec la coopération de LAU (Lebanese American University), AUB (American University of Beirut), ALBA (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts), et autres universités dans la région Arabe, proposent la création d’un “master module on Art, Design and Technology for Arab States”. Le projet a l’objectif d’approcher les disciplines académiques du “computer science” avec celles des pratiques artistiques et créatives. Le « master module” combine les pratiques de l’ordinateur, du design et de la créativité. La 1ère classe master sera organisée selon une base expérimentale en 2005-2006, et sera évaluée par les multiples universités participantes avant qu’elle sera intégrée dans un cursus qui existe déjà dans la région. COMMUNIQUE

Les Journées Méditerranéennes des Arts Plastiques qui sont déjà à leur quatrième session, se tiendront à Sousse (Tunisie) du 09 au 15 Octobre 2003.

Cette manifestation culturelle d’envergure internationale comprend l’organisation d’expositions d’Arts plastiques, et des ateliers-rencontres ainsi qu’un colloque qui regroupe durant plusieurs jours, plusieurs artistes et théoriciens de l’Art des pays de la Méditerranée.

Celui de cette année sera consacré au thème « Nouvelles techniques de re-présentation en rapport avec les technologies nouvelles ». Prévu également au programme, en plus des expositions d’Arts plastiques (Peinture – sculpture – céramique artistique – photographie - etc.) des installations in-situ, des installations vidéo et multimédia interactives qui seront exposées pour la première fois en Tunisie.

Le colloque à contenu variable a pour objectif d’ouvrir un espace de réflexion sur les pratiques artistiques actuelles en relation avec des thèmes qui seront développés tels que :
- Convergence des techniques;
- L’évolution de la notion d’art et des théories esthétiques;
- Les manipulations plastiques actuelles et le devenir de l’art;
- Les rapports qu’entretiennent les pratiques artistiques actuelles avec l’histoire et la société;
-Les effets de l’interpénétration de l’esthétique et de l’éthique dans la société contemporaine;
- Les questions d’ordre épistémologique, social et culturel des diverses pratiques artistiques confrontées à l’usage et à la culture médiatique;
- Les changements produits par les médias et la technologie sur les pratiques artistiques;
- Art et interactivité;
- Place des nouvelles technologies dans le processus de conception de l'œuvre d’art; etc.
